Do I need a fishing licence in the USA?
Almost always, and it is issued per state, not nationally. Licences are sold online by each state wildlife agency, usually as a day, week or annual permit, and a separate saltwater endorsement is common on the coast.
Are fishing derbies suitable for children?
Family and youth derbies are built for them — short sessions, stocked ponds, loaner rods and prizes by age bracket. Competitive bass and offshore tournaments are not. Most states also run at least one free fishing day a year when no licence is needed.
What is catch and release?
Fish are weighed or measured and returned to the water alive. Most modern tournaments run catch-and-release formats and penalise anglers for dead fish at the weigh-in.
Can I fish in a national park?
In many parks, yes, but the rules vary by park and you usually still need the relevant state licence. Some waters are catch-and-release only or closed seasonally to protect spawning fish.
